Almost 2 years ago, I started to stop reading/watching/listening to the news. It’s been a long process and it was gradual, but I don’t regret having taken this path. It feels like having a ton of additional headspace; more space to take care of yourself and the others around you and I never felt like I’m missing out on anything.

It was not an easy thing to do. Before taking this path, I consumed news in many different ways: radio, newspapers, digital newspapers, videos and sometimes tv. At that time, I felt I had to stay on top of the news. I felt that it was almost a citizen act, a moral obligation. I tried my best to be constantly informed of what was going on in the world. But I always ended up tired of trying to keep up with this infinite amount of information. It was my main issue : I wanted so badly to be the kind of person that knew, that could discuss all topics because he was informed. And in the end, I always felt demoralized because I couldn’t keep up the insane rhythm of the news. And it’s normal; we live on a huge planet, there are more than 7 billion people living on earth, and so more than 7 billion stories are happening each day.

Because I want to convince you to take a new look at your habits, here are 7 reasons why you should reduce/stop your news consumption.

  1. 80% of the news will not sound interesting to you
  2. Don’t be afraid of missing out on something
  3. News is depressing
  4. News is the world center of hypocrisy
  5. News works like social media
  6. Be intentional
  7. It feels liberating

1. 80% of the news will not sound interesting to you

Media covers a ton of different subjects. They try to diversify as much as possible in order to target a larger audience. It’s totally normal because the more people they reach, the more money they make. The problem is now on the side of the consumer. If we take the radio as an example, you don’t have the power of skipping this or that part and choose what really interests you. Because it’s a live broadcast, you have to go through the 80 uninteresting percent before finding the 20 that you enjoy.
